Your craft was never just a hobby
patternbreaking podcast — episode 1
When I talk to my patternmaking students, I often detect a tension between two worlds.
The first, the world inside them where there’s a deep knowing that craft and creativity is important to them. The resolute certainty of sewing/knitting/crochet/weaving being their absolute favorite thing. That their craft is what connects them to their mother, grandmother, to their lineage and ancestry.
And the second, the outside world, where hobbies are cute. Little. Pink with scalloped edges. Where the gravity of your sewing/knitting/crochet/weaving is about as heavy as the nee-nee sound of a toy music box. And where if you spend too much time or money on your hobby, you’re seen as a little irresponsible, impractical, and you might even ought to be ashamed.
This second layer is what we’re shedding today.
Your craft was never “just a hobby.”
In this episode, I reflect on why so many creatives treat their deepest devotions as indulgences. Inspired by my grandmother’s hands and the love that still lives in the things she made, this episode is my reminder to you that what you create matters.
One day your hands won’t work like this.
Don’t wait to make what matters.
Music: intro and outro from Kylie Dailey.
